What is Bourbon Maple Pumpkin Pie?

Bourbon maple pumpkin pie is the answer to your pumpkin pie fantasies! The addition of maple syrup and bourbon give this pie extra depth of flavor, making this the ultimate pumpkin pie. I personally don't see myself ever going back to plain pumpkin pie!

The extra flavors give it just a touch of something special, without completely altering the overall taste and texture of the traditional pumpkin pie we all know and love.

What kind of bourbon should I use?

Definitely use a bourbon you like the taste of! For example, don't use a bourbon with smoky undertones, as it won't go well with the sweetness of the maple and pumpkin in the pie.

Also use something rather inexpensive, such as Four Roses or Woodford Reserve. I've tried making this pumpkin pie with both and both are great choices! Save the good stuff for drinking straight! ;)

Perfect pie crust

For this bourbon maple pumpkin pie, I used store bought pie crust. I tend to use store bought pie crust because for some reason, making pie crust is one of my least favorite things.

Additionally, if you're making this pie for a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, you probably have a million other things to do and don't want to bother with making homemade pie crust. However, if you do want to use homemade pie crust, you can make it a day or two ahead of time and store it in the fridge until you're ready to make the pumpkin pie.

I hate a soggy pie crust, so here's a few tips for this pie I used to make sure the crust was nice and crisp!

First Bake

After rolling and shaping the crust, place a sheet of parchment paper or foil into the pie shell and fill with pie weights. You can use dried beans or rice if you don't have the weights. Bake the pie for 20 minutes.

Second bake

Remove the parchment/foil and pie weights and bake the crust for another 5 minutes, until it looks dry.

Third bake

Brush the pie crust with egg wash, and bake for an additional 5 minutes. This is the key to avoiding a soggy crust!

Another tip for pie crust: I like to stick my shaped crust in the freezer for around 30 minutes before baking. I have found this helps the pie hold its shape better while baking.

Decorating maple bourbon pumpkin pie

If you want the same effect I got for this pie, all you need is a simple meringue recipe and a kitchen torch!

For the meringue topping, I used a recipe very similar to this one. To pipe the meringue, I used 2 different sized closed star tips.
